Boarded up

above: Jane Addams Homes – Chicago 2018

On my way home the other night I stopped and made the image above, and it made me think of one of my favorite quotes about being an artist. I wrote it down many years ago and I’m pretty sure it can be attributed to film director, King Vidor.

An artist must keep his doors open to all reality. – King Vidor

update 9/21/18: The other night while referencing Google Maps for the street address where I made the photograph above, I realized I had unknowingly photographed the famous Jane Addams Homes and the future home of the National Public Housing Museum.

from the NPHM site: “The three-story brick building at 1322-24 West Taylor Street opened in 1938 as the first federal government housing project in Chicago. It housed hundreds of families over six decades and has been vacant since 2002.
