In August of last year I posted a few images that I had made, of a small area in Markham, Illinois (Bremen Township) a suburb twenty miles outside of Chicago.
A few months ago the area (bounded by 159th St. and 162nd St. on the north and south sides and Dixie Highway and I-294 on the east and west sides) went from a jungle of dense vegetation and lots of trees with about a dozen homes dotting the area, to almost completely denuded of all vegetation. Soon after the houses started being demolished and by autumn of 2017 most had been torn down. There are still some houses standing there as of late January 2018, but most have spray painted X s on them and I assume that means they will soon be torn down as well.
It was startling to see how fast the area was razed. The vegetation and tree removal was alarmingly fast but the demolition of the houses was even faster.
If you click on each image you can see that the houses looked pretty good only 6 years ago. But what happened?
