120 feet in 12 seconds

First flight, 120 feet in 12 seconds – December 17, 1903

The photograph above was made on the beach at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina at 10:35 in the morning on this day, in 1903.

Orville Wright is at the controls and Wilbur Wright is on the right.

Orville Wright preset the camera and had safety man John T. Daniels squeeze the rubber bulb, tripping the shutter and exposing this 5 x 7 in. dry plate glass negative, recording the momentous event.

You can download a high quality TIFF of the image, here at the Library of Congress site.

We could hardly wait to get up in the morning.
-Wilbur Wright
