The word “photography” was created from the Greek roots (phōtos), “light” and (graphé) “representation by means of lines” or “drawing” – together meaning “drawing with light”.
The 1st use of the word photography was in 1839 when the phrase “picture obtained by photography,” was coined by Sir John Herschel from photo- + -graph “instrument for recording; something written.” It won out over other suggestions, such as photogene and heliograph.
