winter light

Inevitably at this time of year like everyone else, I start to crave light.

Eventhough the days are getting longer, the soft winter light of January and February often makes me think I’m in a Bergman film.

Bergman’s favorite cameramen was Sven Nykvist  and the great Swedish cinematographer had a certain formal approach to cinematography that I really liked. He used beautiful, soft light frequently and his camerawork in general was very elegant to me.

As far as I know he only worked once in Chicago back in 1994 when he photographed With Honors, directed by Alek Keshishian. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get on that one.

The trees wrapped with lights are near the famous Hilton Hotel on Michigan Ave. in downtown Chicago.

Images, not words, capture feelings in faces; nothing
can ruin the atmosphere as easily as too much light.
