A type of small boat

Dinghy: A dinghy (or dingey) is a type of small boat, often carried or towed for use as a ship’s boat,  by a larger vessel.

In Autumn of 2004, I made this image of some dinghies  in Monroe Harbor in Chicago. I shot this one night after all the bigger recreational boats had been taken out of the water but before the city of Chicago had removed the buoys for the season.

Monroe Harbor has 824 mooring “cans” or buoys and can handle vessels that are between 25′ and 80′ in length. The small white dots in the photograph are some of those buoys.

This is another image from my series, 17 Miles of Shoreline – work I did along a 17 mile stretch of Lake Michigan in Chicago from 2002-2013.

I shot this series mostly on Fuji Velvia 50 transparency film and when I look at the originals on the light table, they sparkle like jewels. There’s nothing quite like the beauty of film.
