Salty landscape

above: salty landscape – 2013

The world of close up photography is endlessly fascinating to me, and when you are able to use a lens that can reproduce objects at 5 times life-size, everyday objects often take on an otherworldly quality. The Canon MP-E macro lens is a fairly unusual lens in that it can make objects appear 5 times life-size but it can’t focus at infinity.

This is an image of salt on a cracker photographed with a close up lens. The salt crystals are approximately 1/16th of an inch in size.

Aside from some basic color correction, this is pretty much how the image came out of the Canon 1Dx with a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens.

Our life is frittered away by detail… simplify, simplify.

-Henry David Thoreau
