Sandy self portrait

Before heading out west one year, I did some research and found out you could drive onto the beach and camp overnight at Lake McConaughy in western Nebraska.

So when I got out there after a long day’s drive across a scorching Nebraska, I did just that. I drove onto the beach and when I made this image the next morning, the sand seemed to go on forever.

The lake level was very low due to drought, but camping next to my Jeep was balmy and beautiful.

I slept out on the sand under a sky full of stars, and occasionally during the night a long train loaded with Wyoming coal would pass close by. After being startled awake a few times in the night by the loud Union Pacific locomotives, the warm Nebraska breezes would lull me back to sleep.
